There is an interesting article at cnnmoney.com that takes a closer look at profits being generated in the Apple App Store. While the numbers are not impressive for app creators thus far, (most are hobbyists or companies looking for a marketing platform) the potential is staggering. I am not sure how much I agree with that line of thinking. Currently, the average PC game costs $40 and software will run a customer anywhere from $30 to $200 on average. The mobile software potential is apparent, but to think that consumers will be able and willing to spend computer software prices for the iPhone is still light years away. Apps need to not only become more advanced and robust, they also need to give the market the illusion that the app is worth the money. As of right now, most iPhone user do not believe that paying more than $4.99 for an application is bang for their buck. It will take time for the consumer mindset to change, if ever.
