The meddling hounds at the US Department of Justice are looking into carrier practice regarding hardware restrictions and third party accessibility. Questions have been raised in some circles of American Government regarding the legality of some of the more abrasive practices by American carriers and if antitrust is a possibility. There has been no confirmation of official investigations, but that could happen very soon, as the investigation progresses. Some believe that this inquiry has been born due to aggressive price structuring by carriers, who lock customers into long term deals and prevent easy porting to other carriers in order to maintain their market share. Should this investigation result in a bill preventing carriers from locking customers into long term commitments, it will undoubtedly cause the wireless industry in America to restructure how they do business. It may very well cause a potential iPhone customer to be forced to purchase the handset in its entirety upfront due to the carrier’s fear of the customer fleeing, device in hand.
