After rumors and speculation had swirled around the financial obstacles facing Sony Ericsson, the CFO of Sony dropped a bomb shell when he informed the media that Sony Ericsson would need an injection of about 100 Million Euros to survive until the end of 2009. While even the most optimistic and naïve individual may have thought that all was peachy and rosy in the Japo-Swede house, there is no denying that Sony Ericsson may be the first major mobile player to crumble before the recession passes. As I see it, there are two glaring problems facing Sony Ericsson today. One is a lack of financial backing. With Sony apparently washing its hands of its involvement with Sony Ericsson, it is not clear where the mobile phone manufacturer will acquire some much needed cash. The other problem is the product and for that, Sony Ericsson cannot blame the global economy. The phones released so far this year by Sony Ericsson certainly leave a lot to be desired. One good phone is all it takes for SE to join the game again. Easier said than done.
