Japanese electronics giant Sony, is rumored to be on the verge of relieving Ericsson of its 50% stake in the joint mobile venture known as Sony Ericsson. A prominent German internet publication has reported that Sony is interested in purchasing Ericsson’s share and that the cash strapped Swedish corporation is possibly looking for a way out. Sony Ericsson posted a loss of 187 million dollars in the fourth quarter of 2008, and 2009 economic forecasts don’t offer much faith that the struggling mobile manufacturer will improve its fortunes. Even though Sony Ericsson’s products have been on par with the rest of the mobile community, its market share has declined and some industry experts believe that its survival in the current market doom and gloom is high unlikely. Though speculation usually does not manifest into truth, there appears to be a better than average chance that some kind of change in Sony Ericsson will arrive before the end of 2009.
