The scrupulous triad of RBC, Rogers and Visa have banded together for the next phase of Rogers’ billing innovation. This pilot program allows Rogers’ customers with specific Motorola phones to make purchases at designated Visa PayWave stations in the Toronto area. You can pay for dinner for example, by merely waving you cell phone near the PayWave station, thus forever ruining the old ‘I forgot my wallet’ line that has aided cheap skates and men throughout history. This pilot project is scheduled to take off in mid 2009, with no public launch date confirmed. While this service sounds groundbreaking for consumers, with endless possibilities stemming from this pilot in the near future, (wave your phone in front of a parking meter anyone?) it is also groundbreaking for Visa, as it enables them to bypass the common mental barrier of making a purchase. As long as people don’t have to pull out a credit or debit card, it may give them the illusion of not making a payment. Bankruptcy looms.
