After vomiting ferociously when I saw a picture of Justin Timberlake with a BlackBerry, I asked myself a rather disturbing question. How did the world of mobile and the world of celebrity get so intertwined? On the surface, the answer appears to be related to obvious marketing practices in an industry that is suffering from too much competition and too little innovation. For the average cell phone user, most cell phones are like identical twins. With too many cell phones too choose from and overlapping services that are more of a plague than anything else, mobile customers are experiencing migraines and PMS when considering which cell phones to purchase. In such a monopolistic industry, (many companies making the same product) it only made sense that the branding of household names would be used to help customers differentiate between all the services and options. However, this perversion of cell phones has gone too far. Instead of trying to be different in product, companies are trying to be different in image because they lack vision and innovation. What’s this? I just saw a picture on the net of Paris Hilton holding an iPhone. Now where did I put that barf bucket….
