In 1982 XTC lead guitarist and songwriter Andy Partridge collapsed twice within a couple of months while on stage. XTC announced following these incidents that they would concentrate on studio work, without accompanying concert. Virgin, the record company that XTC were signed with, did not like the refusal to tour following an album release, a choice that proved to hurt album sales.
