Donald Fagen and Walter Becker started steely Dan in 1972. The lineup included Becker (singer, keyboardist), Fagen (bassist), David Palmer (singer, keyboardist), Jim Hodder (drummer), Skunk Baxter and Denny Dias (both: guitar). The band issued its first album called Can't Buy a Thrill in 1972. It was followed by the Countdown to Ecstasy LP the next year.
