Wayne Shorter practiced in the mid-'50s while still an undergraduate with John Coltrane, from whom he learned much. However, even so, Wayne Shorter managed to develop his own style on the saxophone, retaining the tough tone quality and intensity and, in later years, adding an element of funk.
