North Carolina-born country singer Randy Travis had a troubled youth in North Carolina, including brushes with the law, which he escaped thanks to the music. Playing country music at clubs and struggling to get a recording contract in Nashville, consistently turned down for being too country, Randy Travis eventually did sing a contract and by 1986 his song On the Other Hand was re-released and became his first #1 Country single.
