By experimenting with production and writing pseudo-cabaret songs Portishead have taken trip hop away from the dance-direction that Massive Attack have taken it towards more atmospheric, dark realms. Portishead have also managed to popularize the genre in a way no other Bristol band has, in the UK and the US as well.
