Formed in New York in 1998, Interpol are named thus as a play on the lead singer's name Paul Banks. The story tells of a classmate of Banks who would tease him calling out "Paul, Paul, Interpol." When the band started drawing crowds and had to come up with a name, they chose Interpol based on this story.
