The appearance on the British music scene, and soon then after on the UK charts as well, of rock band Dire Straits was at a time punk music was still in rule. Dire Straits, with their minimalist rock and unassuming blues guitars owed more to classical rock and to Eric Clapton than to any up-tempo punk band.
